WHO AM I?
Lotje Koers
I don’t know whether I was born to be in the legal profession, but the legal profession surely is in my blood. My father taught me the profession of lawyer and my great-grandmother was one of the first female lawyers in Arnhem and the surrounding area. They have inspired me.
I followed my law studies in Tilburg and Amsterdam. A nice combination of a solid legal basis that I gained during my bachelor’s degree in Tilburg and also the experience in both advocacy and discussion that I gained during my master’s in Amsterdam.
During my studies I started to put knowledge into practice. I did that at the Public Prosecution Office in Utrecht, where I mainly handled traffic cases. This work experience has proven to be very valuable to me because I learned how the Public Prosecution Office operates and how you can make a difference for your clients in traffic and also other criminal cases.
After having worked for the Public Prosecution Office for three years, I had already completed my law studies for a year, and it was time for the next step: to be a Lawyer. A lawyer has a wonderful profession. Especially if you can help people with criminal or administrative matters. I learned a lot about people and what moves them. Every lawyer can acquire and apply theoretical knowledge, but not every lawyer can make a difference for a client by looking closely at the person and the circumstances of that special case. I can say that I always do. For me, that starts with a genuine interest in people and in the story he or she has to tell, without judging it. Everyone is entitled to their own story.
“After ten years as a lawyer, I thought it was time for the next step in my career: Forseti Legal.”
After ten years as a lawyer, I thought it was time for the next step in my career: Forseti Legal. My own company, where I advise and assist people in my own way, in and outside the Netherlands on subjects regarding criminal law and administrative law.
In addition to my work at Forseti Legal, I teach at the Law Academy of HAN University of Applied Science. What particularly appeals to me in teaching is the combination of theoretical knowledge with practicing law. In this way, the theory comes to life during studying and the students challenge me to know what is going on in my field of expertise and also to be up to date.
I also try to contribute positively in other ways. For example, as a member of the participation council at a school and as a member of the complaints committee of the Child Protection Board. All these different activities complement and reinforce each other.
What has my past brought me? The ability to assess matters quickly and in depth, without losing sight of that special situation and person. This allows me to contribute to a quick and adequate solution for your legal problem.
